How an e-bike day works

Take the ferry to Matiatia, pick up a bike on the island, and build your own loop. The western end around Oneroa puts the first beaches and cellar doors within easy reach; the further east you ride, the quieter the island gets. There is no single official circuit — the pleasure of the format is that the route is yours, and the motor flattens the decision of whether that extra bay is worth it. If you would rather not plan, eRide’s package comes with a pre-planned route, the Five Bays Ride, on a map and in an app.

Time it like a hiker, not like a browser: distances look short on the map, but the constant climbs and descents make island kilometres slower than city ones, and you will stop more often than you plan to — that is the point. If you want a full circuit of the island’s eastern reaches, start on an early ferry; if you mainly want vineyards and a swim, a relaxed half-day after a late-morning crossing works.

If wine is the centre of your day rather than a single stop, a guided wine tour with a driver is the format built for that; the e-bike day is for riders who want the island first and a glass as a footnote.

Do I really need the electric motor?

You will be glad of it. Waiheke's roads climb and dip constantly, and the motor is the difference between a day of riding and a day of pushing. Conventional bikes are available on the island for riders who want the workout.
